NASA - PACE/MSET Grant
PROGRAM OVERVIEW:
The Southwest Texas PACE/MSET Saturday/Summer Academy targets five school districts:
(LaPryor ISD, Uvalde CISD, Crystal City ISD, Carrizo Springs CISD, and
Asherton ISD) student population which have a large number of
economically disadvantaged and minority students. The primary scope and
disciplinary focus of the Southwest Texas PACE/MSET Saturday /Summer
Academy is to 1) strengthen secondary/post-secondary, at-risk students=
skills/knowledge in mathematics as it is applied to science,
engineering, and technology courses, 2) increase future student
enrollment in college MSET disciplines, and 3) encourage students to
pursue careers in these related fields (using business/industry
representatives to teach math skills applications in their fields of
expertise).
Southwest Texas PACE/MSET Saturday/Summer Academy is designed to collaboratively address NASA's, SWTJC's, and each school districts' goals and objectives for strengthening the math skills of 8th - 11th
grade students that have the academic promise, yet are struggling in
mathematics. This program is also designed as a means of early
intervention for a student struggling in mathematics. It is our belief
that a student must have a positive attitude and confidence in his/her
life long mathematical abilities by the end of the 8th grade
year. It is a positive attitude about mathematics that will
significantly influence a student to pursue high school/college level
math and contemplate a future in the MSET fields.
