Academic Counseling
Initial academic advisement is provided for all prospective and current students. When enrolling in college for the first-time, the student meets with a counselor for academic advisement and registration. Thereafter, students are assigned to a counselor or an academic advisor. Academic advising is available to all currently enrolled students according to the students' declared majors. Students should consult with their assigned counselor or academic advisor for approval of academic matters such as choice of electives, course overloads, adding or dropping courses, registration, college services, discuss educational goals and timelines, and develop degree plans.

Degree Plan
Students should select his or her major field of study as early as possible or at the latest, the spring semester of their sophomore year. The planning of a course of study should be exercised in consulting with their assigned counselor or academic advisor. Students are encouraged to meet with their assigned counselor or academic advisor on a regular basis to plan their field of study, monitor their progress toward their educational and career goals, and at any time there is a need to discuss questions of concerns.

Transfer Planning
Counselors and academic advisors provide students with different avenues with transfer information to assist them in their transition to a university in the state of Texas. Mutual agreements between SWTJC and four-year institutions have been established to allow students access to upper-division educational programs. Joint Admissions Agreements and 2+2 programs allow students to follow established course outlines whereby a student can see semester-by-semester what transfer courses can be taken at SWTJC and the courses required for a degree by the university. Transfer Articulation Agreements are designed to match courses at SWTJC with university courses.

Transfer Days are held on the Uvalde campus during the Fall Semester with more than 20 universities from across Texas, provide students an opportunity to visit with recruiters. Dates and times will be posted around campus. Local university recruiters also come to the campus on a regular basis, which also affords students access to transfer information.

Career Counseling
