The SWTJC Cowboys fought off a second-half rally by Northwest Vista College to post a 85-78 victory on Wednesday, Nov. 2.
SWTJC led by nine at the half, but NVC fought back to take a one-point lead, 76-75, with just over four minutes left in the game.
Timely shooting and good defense down the stretch proved to be the difference as the Cowboys upped their league record to 2-1.
"There were lots of ups and downs during the night, but I'm pleased with the way our team hung in there and pulled out a win," coach Richard Flores said.
John Register led the Cowboys scoring attack with 17 points. Cole Martinez had 14 points, including four three-pointers, and Jeremiah King also had 14. Denzel Andrews also scored in double figures, notching 12 points for SWTJC.
Rounding out the scoring were Ethan Lynch, eight points; Ed Salazar and Kejuan Presberry, six points each; Kessler Shimp, four points; and Christopher Lopez, one point.
The Cowboys now face two consecutive road games. Next Wednesday, Nov. 9, they will travel to Victoria to play The Victoria College. On Nov. 16, they will be in San Antonio to take on Palo Alto College.
