The Knippa Lady Crushers and the D'Hanis Cowboys earned spots in the tourney finals, during first day action Dec. 8 in the 52nd SWTJC High School Invitational Basketball Tournament.
Knippa began defense of its 2010 title in the girls division with a 59-25 win over D'Hanis and then went on to down the Leakey Lady Eagles 48-41 to earn a spot in Saturday's championship game.
In the boys division, D'Hanis opened with a 48-26 win over Knippa. In the semifinals, the Cowboys beat Utopia 53-34 to earn their berth in the boys title game on Saturday night.
Following their opening round loss to Knippa, the D'Hanis Cowgirls earned a spot in the consolation finals with a 59-26 win over Utopia.
In the boys consolation bracket, the Leakey Eagles won a spot in the finals with a 45-38 win over the Knippa Rockcrushers.
Friday's action (Dec. 9) will open with the Sabinal Lady Jackets playing the Brackettville Tigerettes at 8:30 a.m., followed by a game at 10 between the defending boys champion Sabinal Yellowjackets and the Brackettville Tigers.
Other opening round games will feature the boys and girls teams from Nueces Canyon and La Pryor facing off with the girls playing at 11:30 a.m. and the boys game set at 1 p.m.
Action in the tournament will conclude Saturday, Dec. 10, with the girls championship at 6:30 followed by the boys title game at 8 p.m.
All games are being played in the La Forge Hall Gymnasium on the SWTJC Uvalde campus.
