Sabinal teams dominate play on day two of SWTJC tourney

The defending champion Sabinal Yellowjackets and the Sabinal Lady Jackets advanced to the championship round with their play in day two (Dec. 9) of the 52nd Annual SWTJC High School Basketball Invitational.

Sabinal's boys team opened defense of their title with a 66-36 win over Brackett and then cruised past the Nueces Canyon Panthers, 56-29, to earn their place in the finals. The Yellowjackets will be going for their third straight title when they play D'Hanis in the championship game at 8 p.m. on Saturday, Dec. 10.

In the boys consolation bracket, Brackett blasted La Pryor to earn a spot in the consolation finals against the Leakey Eagles. The consolation final will be played Saturday at 2 p.m.

The Sabinal Lady Jackets opened tourney play with a 54-34 blowout over Brackett and then, in the closest game of the tournament, edged out the Nueces Canyon Lady Panthers, 43-41, to reach the championship round. Sabinal will play the defending champion Knippa Lady Crushers at 6:30 p.m. Saturday for the girls title.

In girls consolation, Brackett downed La Pryor, 48-40, to earn their spot in the consolation finals against D'Hanis at 12:30 p.m.

All games are being played in the La Forge Hall Gymnasium on the SWTJC Uvalde campus.
