It was a clean sweep for Sabinal in the 52nd annual SWTJC High School Invitational Basketball Tournament.
The Sabinal Lady Jackets claimed their first girls title since 1977 in a hard-fought 51-46 win over the defending champion Knippa Lady Crushers. Tournament most valuable player Ericka Torres led her team to victory with 28 points.
In the boys division, the Sabinal Yellowjackets won their third straight tourney title with a convincing 59-40 victory over the D'Hanis Cowboys. Sabinal senior Zach Shockley had 19 points to lead the Yellowjackets to their third consecutive championship.
Other girls action during the final-day of play on Saturday (Dec. 10), showed the Leakey Lady Eagles down the Nueces Canyon Lady Panthers, 57-45, for third place; the Brackett Tigerettes beat the D'Hanis Cowgirls, 41-30, to win consolation; and the La Pryor Lady Bulldogs blasted the Utopia Lady Buffalos, 65-18, to claim seventh place.
The Utopia Buffalos beat the Nueces Canyon Panthers, 69-35, to claim third place honors in the boys bracket. In the boys consolation final, the Brackett Tigers outlasted the Leakey Eagles, 62-57 in triple overtime, while the Knippa Rockcrushers beat the La Pryor Bulldogs, 46-31, to take seventh place.
