The annual scholarship drive of the Southwest Texas Junior College Friends and Alumni Network (FAN), conducted from October through December, netted $28,290.
"Once again, the generosity of area individuals and businesses was fantastic," drive chairman Willie Edwards said. "We thank everyone who supported our drive and look forward to awarding another round of scholarships to high school graduates this May."
According to Edwards, proceeds from a drawing totaled $15,640 and an additional $12,650 came from individual and business donations.
"Diana Garcia, Gladue Tafolla and Lidia Alvarez deserve special recognition for all their work on this year's drawing," Edwards said. "We also thank all FAN members for selling tickets and all the businesses who donated prizes."
Winners in this year's drawing were announced at the annual SWTJC Christmas Open House held Dec. 1 in Uvalde.
Due to the lack of a suitable site, this year's scholarship drive did not include the annual SWTJC FAN President's Gala, but Edwards said the event will be back on the schedule in the fall of 2012.
"We plan to bring the gala back and make it bigger and better than ever in November," Edwards said.
Formed in 2007, the SWTJC FAN has awarded over $80,000 in scholarships to graduating seniors from area high schools, as well as to other deserving students through the SWTJC scholarship fund.
"With the success of this year's drive we hope to be able to award another $30,000 in scholarships for the 2012-13 school year," Edwards said. "With the rising costs of education and the decline in state and federal funding, these scholarships make a big difference for students across the region. Once again, thanks to everyone for their support."
