"I want to thank counselor Vanessa Alvarado and the staff at Hondo High, as well as Hondo Area Chamber of Commerce executive director Wade Smith, for all their help getting this inaugural event organized," Mata said.
SWTJC staff were on hand to conduct breakout sessions for the group on financial aid and the admissions process. In addition, students were made of aware of classes SWTJC will be offering this summer in Hondo. A tour of the new facility was also part of the day's activities.
"More than anything else we wanted to give students a chance to see this great facility and let them know that SWTJC now has a home in Hondo," Mata said.
College day participants were provided pizza, soft drinks, cake and ice cream for lunch. A dodge ball competition followed lunch with prizes provided by the chamber. Dodge ball winners included Christina Faseler, Donovan Gutierrez and Isaac Garcia.
SWTJC began offering classes at the center this past fall. A total of 39 students were registered for fall classes. This spring a total of 59 students are enrolled.
The college now has a representative at the center on a daily basis. Shawna Walton is the receptionist at the center for both the college and the chamber.
