Basketball season ends, post-season tourney starts March 7

Basketball competition in the South Texas Club Sports League ended Feb. 29 and the schedule is set for post-season tournament play, starting March 7.

SWTJC men finished regular season play on Feb. 24 with a 108-93 win over Victoria College. Leading the scoring for the Cowboys were: Alvin Stevens, 30; John Register, 20; and Ed Salazar, 15 points.

With the win, the Cowboys finished the regular season in first place with a 11-3 record. Victoria College had the second best league record at 10-4.

The Cowboys are the top seed in next week's post season tournament. They will play their first game at 8 p.m. on Saturday, March 10, against the lowest seeded team to advance from the first round. If they win Saturday, the Cowboys will play for the tourney championship Sunday, March 11 at 4 p.m.

In the men's division, first round games on Wednesday, March 7, include Palo Alto at Victoria College, Northeast Lakeview at University of the Incarnate Word and Northwest Vista at St. Philip's.

The SWTJC Cowgirls finished league play at home on Feb. 29, losing to Northwest Vista College, 59-51. For the season, SWTJC finished fifth in the six-team league with a record of 3-11.

According to coach Jesus Garcia, his team will play Northwest Vista again on Wednesday, March 7, in San Antonio in the first round of the post-season tournament. If they win their game with NVC, the Cowgirls will play again on Saturday, March 10, against Palo Alto College (13-2).

All tournament games on Saturday and Sunday will be played at The University of the Incarnate Word in San Antonio.
