Meeting in special session on Oct. 9, the Southwest Texas Junior College Board of Trustees approved minor changes to its lease contract in Del Rio with the SWTJC Foundation and made amendments totaling $345,586 to the 2012-13 operating budget.
Juan Aguilera, attorney with San Antonio-based bonding counselors Escamilla, Poneck & Cruz, LLP, explained to the board that several minor changes were needed on the ground lease in Del Rio before a proposed $7.9 million construction project can be funded.
"Once you approve these changes we will send the contract to the Attorney General for approval and then we will be ready to proceed," Aguilera said. Once funding is secured and the board approves final plans, the SWTJC Foundation will be ready to advertise for sealed bids.
SWTJC President-Elect Hector Gonzales told the board that the budget amendments up for consideration were the result of an additional cutback in state funding.
Gonzales said the amendments would not represent any reduction of funding for instructional programs, or employee salaries and benefits.
"We overestimated several expenditures in this year's budget," Gonzales said. "We aren't really having to cut anything."
