The SWTJC Board of Trustees gave the green light on Thursday (Oct. 18) to advertise for bids on the construction project at the Del Rio campus.
Contractors interested in bidding on the 40,000-square foot project should contact architect Tom Ferrell at email@example.com
Ferrell, a partner in the architectural firm of Ferrell/Brown and Associates in Corpus Christi, presented blueprints for the project which includes the addition of a new 36,000 square-foot academic building, a new 5,900 square-foot administration building and various remodeling projects on existing buildings.
SWTJC President-Elect Hector Gonzales told the board he was pleased with the design and ready to move forward with advertising for bids.
"We have had lots of input from faculty and staff to make sure the proposed project works for them," Gonzales said. "I think we have a great design and am excited about moving forward,"
Ferrell told the board the project that cost estimates for the project are $7.89 million, the same as when he first presented his site plan in August. "Our cost estimates haven't changed, but with lots of hungry contractors looking for work, we have our fingers crossed that bids could come in lower than estimated," Ferrell said.
Next step in the process will be to send out an invitation to submit proposals. Deadline for submitting proposals will be Nov. 13.
In other business at their regular monthly meeting, the board renewed its lease for one year for classroom and computer lab space at the South Texas Regional Training Center in Hondo.
According to President-Elect Gonzales, the number of classes and enrollment have both increased dramatically over the past year at the Hondo facility.
"We are very pleased with the response to our increased presence in Hondo," Gonzales said.
The number of classes offered in the fall of 2011 was 14 and the enrollment was 37. This fall, the number of classes has increased to 23 and enrollment has risen to 85.
In the only other action taken at Thursday's meeting, the board voted to move the November meeting from Nov. 15 to Nov. 29, to allow time for the college's annual audit to be finalized and to prepare a report on bid proposals received on the Del Rio construction project.
