Members of the SWTJC Foundation, Inc., Board of Trustees have accepted the low bid of $6,656,200 from Templeton Construction of San Angelo for work on a major construction project on the college's Del Rio campus.
"We have worked with Templeton on numerous projects," architect Tom Ferrell told the board at its Nov. 29 meeting, "They are a quality contractor."
Ferrell also noted that Templeton's bid is $408,700 below the recommended budget for the project which includes a 32,615 square foot academic building and a 5,915 square foot administration building.
A total of eight bids were received for the project. Construction will begin this month and the contract calls for all work to be completed by the summer of 2014.
In other business, the foundation board learned of a $862,000 gift the college has received from the Charles and Polly Chandler foundations.
"This is a very generous gift and we are very grateful," board president Rodolfo R. Flores said.
Charles Chandler was a retired air force officer and longtime civil service employee at Laughlin Air Force Base in Del Rio. His wife, Polly Chandler, was a longtime high school English teacher for the Del Rio-San Felipe CISD.
Prior to the foundation meeting, the SWTJC Board of Trustees held their monthly meeting.
Accountant Eric Ede of Ede and Company presented the college's 2011-2012 audit.
"The college received an unqualified opinion which is the best you can receive," Ede said.
In other matters, the board approved extending the note on the Crystal City facility for $557,000 with First State Bank and heard reports on the college's multi-hazardous emergency response plan, formula recommendations from the Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board and the IPEDS annual summary.
