The Sabinal Yellow Jackets and Knippa Lady Crushers are the 2012 champions of the 53rd Annual SWTJC High School Invitational Basketball Tournament following finals action on Saturday, Dec. 8.
Sabinal won its fourth straight boy's title with a 61-57 over the Utopia Buffaloes, while the Knippa Lady Crushers downed the Leakey Lady Eagles, 33-24 to claim the girl's title.
With their victory, Sabinal becomes only the third boy's team in tourney history to win four consecutive titles. Knippa won four straight from 1990-1993 and Utopia had four in a row from 2001-2004.
After a back-and-forth game the first quarter, Sabinal opened an eight point lead at the half, 30-22. Utopia cut the lead to two points at 57-55 with two minutes to play, but the Yellowjackets held on for a 61-57 win.
In the girl's title game, Knippa held a 15-14 halftime lead. At the end of the third quarter, Knippa's Caitlin hit a rainbow three-point shot at the buzzer to extend the Lady Crusher lead to 28-20. The Lady Eagles cut the lead to six points, 30-24, with four minutes left, but the Lady Crushers defense shut Leakey out the rest of the way to claim the title, 33-24.
Sabinal senior Elijah Gonzales was the tournament most valuable player for the boys, while Knippa senior Leonor Diaz was the girl's MVP.
In other boy's games Saturday, Nueces Canyon beat La Pryor, 54-46, to claim seventh place, while Brackett downed D'Hanis, 43-27, to take consolation. Knippa beat Leakey, 40-30, to claim third place.
Other girl's division game Saturday saw La Pryor down Utopia, 36-31, for seventh place, while Brackett beat D'Hanis, 37-29, to win the consolation title. Nueces Canyon blasted Sabinal, 41-20, to take third in the girl's division.
