SWTJC trying to organize jazz band

Southwest Texas Junior College wants to help organize a college/community jazz band starting this fall.

According to SWTJC Public Information Officer Willie Edwards, meetings will be held the next two Thursdays, Sept. 15 and 22, to try and determine if there is enough interest to get the project going.

"We have several former members of the Uvalde High School jazz band attending classes with us this semester and I told them I would try and help them get something going," Edwards said. "We will meet in the Tate Auditorium at 6 p.m. on the 15th and 22nd and see what happens."

Uvalde High School jazz band director Mark Lyon has agreed to help with the project and serve as director.

"Mark is excited about the project and urges anyone in the community with an instrument, some talent and an interest in jazz to consider joining the group," Edwards said. "One thing about it, with Mark involved it should be fun."

Practice times will be in the evening at the college. Details of practice times and other information will be discussed at the organizational meetings.
