flagpoleWork is underway to repair the flagpole behind the SWTJC Administration Building, one of the few remnants of the former Garner Field pilot training facility operated by the U.S. Army Air Corps from 1941-1945 on the current site of Southwest Texas Junior College.

"We've been trying to get this flagpole worked on for several years and Uvalco was gracious enough to help us out on the project," said Dick Whipple, SWTJC Associate Vice President of Institutional Advancement.

According to Whipple, the flagpole will be repainted and a new halyard will be installed to make it functional again.

"The college still holds patriotic assemblies in the fountain area behind the administration building and we want to be able to once again fly our nation's flag high over our campus on those occasions," Whipple said.

Uvalco employee Jim Ed Sturdivant took the flagpole down on Thursday, Aug. 8. Once repairs are made, it will be put back in place later this month.
