College rodeo starts three-night run Thursday in Uvalde

Top college rodeo athletes from across Texas and Louisiana will be featured over three nights of competition at the Uvalde County Fairplex Arena, starting Thursday (Oct. 3).

According to Southwest Texas Junior College rodeo coach Roy Angermiller, the 51st Annual SWTJC Rodeo will be held Thursday through Saturday, Oct. 3-5, with performances starting at 7:30 p.m. POSTER

"Once again we think we have a great event planned for rodeo enthusiasts from across the region," Angermiller said. "The facility is outstanding and the action will be fast paced. It should be three nights of great entertainment for the entire family."

Angermiller thanks area businesses for their support of college rodeo in Uvalde. "We couldn't put on this event without the outstanding support of businesses and individuals from across the region," Angermiller said. " I can't thank them enough for their continued support."

Twelve teams from the Southern Region of the National Intercollegiate Rodeo Association will compete in both men's and women's divisions.

Action in the three-day rodeo will begin on Thursday, Oct. 3, with nightly performances scheduled through Oct. 5. This year's rodeo will also feature a finals performance on Saturday night with the top eight performers from Thursday and Friday earning spots in the finals.

Tickets for the event are $8 pre-sale and $10 at the gate. Children 12 and under and current SWTJC students with valid identification will be admitted free of charge.

SWTJC teams will go up against men's and women's teams from Sam Houston State University, Texas A&M College Station, Texas A&M Kingsville, Panola Junior College, McNeese State University (Lake Charles, La.), Hill College, Northeast Texas Community College, Trinity Valley Community College, Lone Star Community College, Stephen F. Austin State University and Wharton Junior College.

In the men's division, competition will be held in bareback bronc riding, calf roping, steer wrestling, saddle bronc riding, team roping and bull riding. Events for the women include barrel racing, breakaway roping and goat tying.

Pre-sale ticket outlets include Hondo National Bank, Oasis Outback, Rockin R, Texas Farm Store, Walmart, Country Gardens & Seed and the administration office at SWTJC.
