Team ropers Wes Troyer and Colton Nelson led the SWTJC men to their best finish of the year at the Northeast Texas Community College Rodeo held Oct. 10-12 in Mt. Pleasant, TX.
Troyer and Nelson won first place with a time of 6.8 to take first place in team roping. With their first place finish in Mt. Pleasant, the SWTJC pair has moved into first place in the season standings for the Southern Region of the National Intercollegiate Rodeo Association (NIRA).
Also earning points for the Cowboys in Mt. Pleasant was Juan Roberto Garcia III who finished fifth in bull riding.
Overall, the SWTJC men's team finished third behind McNeese State University and Sam Houston State University. After three events this fall, the SWTJC men are in fourth place overall.
In the women's competition, SWTJC's Morgann McDonald continued her domination of the barrel racing event finishing first with a time of 15.33 seconds.. Rozlyn Reeves had a time of 15.78 seconds to finish eighth in barrels. McDonald also earned points for the women's team with a seventh place finish in goat tying.
Overall, the SWTJC women finished fourth in the team competition. For the season, the SWTJC women are in second place with 765.25 points. McNeese State leads the women's team competition with 801.5 points.
With three straight wins, McDonald has a commanding lead in the overall barrel racing standings for the season. Reeves is in fourth place overall in barrels and eighth in goat tying.
Next action for the SWTJC rodeo teams will be Nov 1-2 at the McNeese State University Rodeo in Lake Charles, Louisiana. The fall season will conclude on Nov. 7-9 in Conroe, TX, at the Sam Houston State University Rodeo.
