Southwest Texas Junior College will host its 49th consecutive National Intercollegiate Rodeo Association (NIRA) event on Oct. 6-8 in Uvalde. Evening performances will start at 7:30 p.m. on Thursday, Friday and Saturday night.
For the second straight year, the annual event will be held at the SWTJC Rodeo Arena, located off Garner Field Road just east of the Uvalde campus.
"With the county fairplex still under consturction, we will be having the rodeo at our arena again this year," SWTJC rodeo coach Roy Angermiller said. "We have added to our grandstands since last year so there will be plenty of good seats available."
The SWTJC rodeo is the first competition this fall in the Southern Region of the NIRA. Other fall rodeos are scheduled in Mt. Pleasant, Conroe, Nacogdoches and Lake Charles, LA.
Over 300 collegiate athletes, representing some 10 colleges and universities in the Southern Region are expected to compete in Uvalde. Nationally renowned rodeo stock contractor Terry Walls will once again provide stock for this year's event.
Professional rodeo clown and barrelman "Backflip" Johnny Dudley of Athens, TX, will also be a featured part of this year's event.
"Backflip Johnny is considered one of the hottest new talents in the PRCA," Angermiller said. "I know he will do a great job of keeping the crowds entertained during and between events."
As far as the rodeo competition, SWTJC teams will go up against men's and women's teams from Sam Houston State University, Texas A&M College Station, Texas A&M Kingsville, McNeese State University (Lake Charles, La.), Hill College, Northeast Texas Community College, Trinity Valley Community College, Stephen F. Austin State University and Wharton Junior College.
In the men's division, competition will be held in bareback bronc riding, calf roping, steer wrestling, saddle bronc riding, team roping and bull riding. Events for the women include barrel racing, breakaway roping and goat tying.
Tickets for nightly performances are $8 pre-sale and $10 at the gate. Local ticket outlets include Texas Farm Store, Rockin' R Western Wear, WalMart, Country Gardens and Seed, Hondo National Bank, Oasis Outback and the SWTJC Administration Office.
Children 12 and under, and SWTJC students who show a current student ID, will be admitted free of charge.
The SWTJC Faculty Association will operate the concession stand at this year's rodeo, serving drinks and a variety of food items. Proceeds from the concession stand will be used for student scholarships.
