Angelo On Monday March 24, 2014, representatives from Angelo State University (ASU) visited Southwest Texas Junior College. Dr. Brian May, President of Angelo State University, and Dr. Javier Flores, Vice President of Student Affair and Enrollment Management visited the Del Rio and Eagle Pass campuses.

In Del Rio, Derek Sandoval, Associate Vice President of the Del Rio Campus conducted a tour of the recently opened administration building and soon-to-open student classroom building. Dr. May and Dr. Flores visited with students and discussed the potential to work together on Science, Technology, Engineering , and Math (STEM) degree programs with SWTJC faculty and administration, including Dr. Hector Gonzales, SWTJC president. Also in attendance was Dr. Carlos Rios, Superintendent of San Felipe-Del Rio CISD, who expressed interest and support in a partnership between SWTJC and ASU.

Dr. May, Dr. Flores, and Dr. Gonzales then traveled to Eagle Pass where the presidents signed an articulation agreement to establish a closer working relationship between SWTJC and ASU.   In the presence of students, faculty, and guests, Dr. May announced that the first program articulation would be in Civil Engineering.  Students will complete their first two years of college at SWTJC, graduating with an Associate of Science in Engineering Science.  SWTJC students will then transfer to ASU to complete the remaining two years of ASU’s Civil Engineering bachelor’s degree program.

Also in attendance at the Eagle Pass signing was Mr. Gilberto Gonzalez, Superintendent of Eagle Pass ISD, and Mr. Samuel Mijares, Assistant Superintendent for Curriculum and Instruction.  Superintendent Gonzalez expressed enthusiasm for the agreement, explaining that it would provide a much needed engineering career pathway for local high school graduates.  Mr. Mijares stated that EPISD was starting a pre-engineering program that would fit neatly with the partnership between SWTJC and ASU.  Mr. Gilbert Bermea, Associate Vice President of the SWTJC Eagle Pass Campus, hosted the visit.

Angelo State University is located in San Angelo, Texas just a two and one-half hour drive north of Del Rio on Highway 277.  ASU’s enrollment is around 7,000 and it offers over 100 programs of study.  Many prominent citizens of Del Rio and Eagle Pass were one-time students at ASU including Dr. Rios of SFDR-CISD and Dr. Gonzales of SWTJC.  One particularly outstanding feature of ASU is the support students receive from the local Carr Foundation.  Since its inception 1981, more than 28,000 students have benefited from Carr scholarships totaling over $72 million dollars.  Student debt among ASU graduates is among the lowest in the United States.
