The 2011 fall scholarship drive for the SWTJC Friends and Alumni Network (FAN) is off and running.
According to drive chairman Willie Edwards, letters are being mailed this week to past contributors and tickets are now on sale for a 16-prize drawing with proceeds to benefit the FAN scholarship fund.
"The annual President's Gala has been our main fund-raiser for the past four years, but with the remodeling scheduled at the civic center we didn't feel like there was a suitable place to hold it this year," Edwards said. "We plan to bring the gala back next year and make it bigger and better than ever."
Formed in 2007, the SWTJC FAN has awarded over $80,000 in scholarships to graduating seniors from area high schools, as well as to other deserving students through the SWTJC scholarship fund.
"During the 2011-2012 school year, FAN has committed $32,000 in scholarships for students attending classes in Uvalde, Del Rio, Eagle Pass and Crystal City," Edwards said. "As the costs of college continues to rise, while state and federal financial aid continues to decline, these scholarships will be more important than ever in helping area students pursue their education."
FAN members will be selling drawing tickets from now through December 1 when winners will be announced at the college's annual Christmas Open House in Uvalde.
"We have 16 prizes in this year's drawing, from hunting rifles and TVs, to laptop computers and gift cards," Edwards said. "We thank all the individuals and businesses who supported us this year by donating these fantastic prizes."
