For the first time in school history, SWTJC will compete in women's volleyball this year as part of the South Texas Club Sports League.
The first match of the season will be at home against Palo Alto College on Thursday, Oct. 13. Action will begin at 7 p.m. in the La Forge Hall Gymnasium.
"I'm nervous and excited at the same time," coach Michael Flores said. "Our team has been getting better every week and we are looking forward to our first game."
Admission to all matches will be $2. All SWTJC students, faculty and staff, as well as children 12 and under will be admitted free of charge.
According to Flores, the team traveled to San Antonio on Oct. 6 to scrimmage Northwest Vista College. "The girls played awesome and we won the match two games to one," Flores said.
Since this is the first volleyball season for both SWTJC and the league, Flores said he doesn't really know what to expect in terms of the level of competition.
"Rumor is that our first opponent, Palo Alto, is supposed to be pretty loaded," Flores said. "I guess we will see Thursday night."
Ten teams are scheduled to compete in league play this fall and next spring. The league will be divided into two divisions, east and west.
The Cowgirls will play in the west division which includes teams from Trinity University, The University of Texas at San Antonio, Northwest Vista College and University of the Incarnate Word.
In the east division, teams include The Victoria College, Palo Alto College, St. Philip's College, UTSA 2 and Northeast Lakeview College.
Plans call for teams to play each other twice within their division and once against teams in the opposing division. Play will tentatively begin on Oct. 13 and end on Dec. 1 for the fall semester. League play will begin in the spring semester on Jan. 26.
Upcoming games for the Cowgirls will be Oct. 20 in San Antonio against UTSA and on Oct. 27 at home against University of the Incarnate Word.
