Welcome to Southwest Texas Junior College's Dual Credit program, a great opportunity for juniors and seniors to get a jump start on earning college credit while still in high school.

This program offers the following benefits:

  • Expands academic options for college- bound high school students 
  • Minimizes the duplication of course's taken in high school and colleges; 
  • Shortens the time required to complete an undergraduate degree; and, 
  • Significantly reduces the cost of higher education

Requirements

Eligibility Requirements

Students who would like to take advantage of dual credit opportunities must meet all of the following:

1.  Be classified as a junior or senior
2.  Meet established admissions requirements and prerequisites for the desired course
3.  Comply with the state-mandated college entrance exam, the TSI.  If a student does not meet exemptions based on SAT, ACT, EOC, OR STAAR
4.  Attend mandatory New Dual Credit Student Orientation
5.  Pay the reduced costs associated with taking a dual credit/concurrent enrollment college course. 


Admissions Process

In order for the admission process to begin, the following must be submitted:

1. A completed application for admissions.  Apply at www.applytexas.org Apply Texas step-by-step instructions
2. Completed and signed Concurrent/Dual Credit form
3. Completed Dual Credit Consent form
4. Receipt and verification that college entrance testing requirements or exemptions have been met.  These scores must be provided

Testing Requirements
Potential dual credit students must fulfill TSI requirements by:

1. Being exempt with specific scores via SAT, ACT, EOC, and STAAR
2. Taking the TSI exam and receiving the minimum passing score on the applicable sections required for entry level in the course desired

10K Scholar's Program

Southwest Texas Junior College/Sul Ross - Rio Grande College

 

OVERVIEW
 
This program offers a bachelor’s degree for $10,000, excluding textbooks and some fees. Students will earn an associate and bachelor degree. Available majors for the bachelor degree are Biology and Mathematics. Students will pay $10,000 split between SWTJC and SR-RGC. The program employs a plan to cap the student cost at $10,000. The rebate is applied at key times to serve as an incentive for completion.
 
DETAILS
  • 29 Dual credit hours which apply to the Core Curriculum
  • 31 hours at SWTJC to complete core curriculum and A.S. degree
  • 60 hours at SR-RGC to complete the major, minor, electives, and required upper level hours
  • Enrollment may be limited to available rebates
  • Available majors:

                      4. Mathematics Secondary Education                      
                     

REBATE AWARDING
  • Upon successful completion of first semester courses at SR-RGC in one of the designated majors, SWTJC will apply a rebate to the student’s account for any excess over $1930, excluding any specialized fees such as online, lab, other specific use fees, and textbooks.
  • Upon graduation from SR-RGC with BS degree in one of the designated majors, students will receive a rebate for any excess over $8070 excluding textbooks or other unrelated fees.
Conditions for Acceptance into the Program
 
          1. Eligible for full admission
          2. 29 hours of specific dual credit coursework
          3. 2.5 high school GPA
          4. Apply to both SWTJC and SR-RGC
          5. Completed FAFSA
 
Conditions for Receipt of the Rebate
 
         1. Full time enrollment in all fall and spring semesters – 15 hours each term
         2. Maintain a 3.0 GPA
         3. Accept financial aid to which student is eligible (excludes loans)
         4. Rebate eligibility ends if student drops any courses or withdraws
         5. Total completion time will be 6 semesters (fall and spring) summer excluded unless courses needed  for the major are only offered during summer terms
                 a. Completion of SWTJC A.S. degree in 1 year
                 b. Completion of SR-RGC B.S. degree in 2 subsequent years
         6. Student pays all other costs (Student may use financial aid, loans, or personal funds).

Rebate Awarding Details

         1.  Student will receive approval into the program and be informed of eligibility for the rebate.
         2. Student will be charged full tuition and fees for each term of enrollment.
         3. Student will not be dropped from courses for non-payment since they will be reimbursed for amount at a later time.
         4.  Rebates will be credited to the student’s account according to the schedule detailed above.
         5.  Student must accept financial aid offered (other than loans). The rebate will be applied to any difference between the financial aid award and the portion of the student cost.
         6. Student must have been enrolled full time, maintained required GPA, and completed approved courses on their designated degree plan.
