Automotive Technology

Purpose
The purpose of the Automotive Technology program is to provide the students training in all eight areas of automotive A.S.E. certification. These areas include: engine repair, automatic trans/transaxle, manual drive train and axles, suspension and steering, brakes, electrical systems, heating and air conditioning, and engine performance. The goal of the program is for graduates to be employable as entry level mechanics in a service shop or dealership.

Admission Requirements
Students are admitted to the Automotive Technology (AUMT) program on an individual basis. It is not required that students be high school graduates, although high school graduation is encouraged. Students who are not high school graduates are required to take the GED. Students who do not obtain satisfactory scores on the GED may apply for individual approval to the Dean of Admissions and Student Services. In order to be admitted, students must:

1. complete an admission application.

2. file a copy of the high school transcript with the Registrar's Office.

3. enroll in the student insurance plan sponsored by the college or furnish evidence that they are covered by hospitalization insurance for the duration of the course.

4. be at the READ 0302 level based on the TASP test.

Program of Study

The Automotive Technology program carries two certificate options. The first is a one-year "Basic Certificate" covering four of the A.S.E. recommended study areas. The one-year certificate is TASP-waived. Students who wish to continue for an additional year may attain the two-year "Certificate of Completion" that covers the remaining four A.S.E. study areas. The two-year certificate is not TASP-waived. For either certificate, the student who completes the required courses must make a formal application for graduation. (See Curricula Section.) At the completion of each certificate, students will be required to take the appropriate A.S.E. Student Examinations. Full time day students are scheduled for all courses in a given semester. With instructor consent, part-time students may enroll for individual courses as offered in the day or evening.
