The Middle Rio Grande Law Enforcement Academy serves a nine county region extending west from Uvalde to the Texas-Mexican border and south to Cotulla. The function of the academy is to provide law enforcement training to several publicly funded police agencies, as well as private correctional facilities within the region. The academy offers a wide-range of classes to include the Basic Peace Officer and Basic County Correctional Officer Courses, and in-service classes required for continuing education and license renewal. The academy’s primary function is the administration of the 700-hour Basic Peace Officer Course (BPOC). The BPOC is an intense, twenty-nine topic, comprehensive course established by the Texas Commission on Law Enforcement Standards and Education (TCLEOSE).
Throughout the Basic Peace Officer Course students will be required to take approximately 50 written examinations covering 29 topic areas. Additionally, they will learn and be tested over skills covering firearms, police driving, arrest-control tactics, and standardized field sobriety testing. Students must pass all skills tests and maintain an 85% average on all written examinations to be eligible to take the final examination. Students who score an 85% or higher on the final examination will receive an endorsement letter from the academy coordinator and be eligible to sit for the State licensing exam. Upon passing the State exam, students will be qualified to go to work immediately for numerous law enforcement agencies throughout the state of Texas.
