SOUTHWEST TEXAS JUNIOR COLLEGE

COLLEGE BOUND PROGRAM

SERVICES

The COLLEGE BOUND PROGRAM is a ten-week Academic/Work Experience Program that provides each student with the following opportunities and services:

i) The opportunity to earn six hours of college credit and two college P.E. courses or to take remedial classes to prepare to pass the Texas Academic Skills Program (TASP) and two one-hour college P.E. classes. The Pre-TASP (local placement test) is administered to students before summer enrollment. The results of the Pre-TASP determines which courses each student is eligible to take.

ii) Personal, academic, career, and financial counseling is provided by the program counselors. Each student has the opportunity to apply for financial aid regardless of which institution of higher education he/she wishes to eventually attend. Students also have the opportunity to utilize the college's Career Center, which features the state-of-the-art DISCOVER - Career and College exploration software. This program affords students the opportunity to develop educational goals related to their interests.

iii) Peer Tutoring is provided by successful SWTJC or other college students that can serve as role models and mentors as well as provide academic assistance.

iv) Upon selection to participate in the program, a skills assessment is administered to determine each participant's areas of strength and aptitude. Twenty-five participants are invited to participate in the development of a work study project that will focus on building skills and expertise in computer networking and design. Those who choose not to participate in this program are assigned to workstudy positions in a variety of settings allowing them the opportunity to develop skills in those areas that have been identified by the assessment instrument. Students have the opportunity to work in a job that provides work experience that facilitates cognitive and career-oriented development (not manual labor). Employment is with state, federal, county, or local government offices; school districts; or Southwest Texas Junior College. Each student is allowed to work a maximum of sixteen hours per week at minimum wage.

v) It has been demonstrated that students from this region who begin their college careers at remote, large universities very often become discouraged and demoralized because of the radical and overwhelming change from their home environment. The COLLEGE BOUND PROGRAM provides students with the opportunity to make a gradual transition, thus enhancing their chances at succeeding in their educational goals and aspirations.

All students will apply for the Administration of the TASP. Field trips and other social and cultural activities will be featured in the program.

All books, pencils, pens, notebooks are provided by the program.. Come prepared to study!

Students are allowed to leave campus on certain weekends. Transportation is provided by the college. Students stay on campus for four (4) weekends. Activities are planned for these weekends.
