Brackett, Nueces Canyon win titles in 58th annual high school tournament

 

The Brackettville Tigers and Nueces Canyon Lady Panthers are the 2017 champions of the 58th Annual SWTJC High School Invitational Basketball Tournament following finals action on Saturday, Dec. 2.

Brackett beat Knippa 63-46, while the Nueces Canyon Lady Panthers downed the Knippa Lady Crushers, 45-17 to claim the girl's title.

Brackett’s win marks the fifth time the Tigers have been crowned champions of the college tournament since it began in 1961.

For the Lady Panthers, this is their eleventh championship title during the 58 years of the tournament.

Brackett senior Juan Morales was the tournament most valuable player for the boys, while Nueces Canyon senior Megan Sifuentes was the girl's MVP.

In other boy's games Saturday, Leakey beat Utopia, 71-48, to claim third place, while Sabinal downed Nueces Canyon, 51-32, to take consolation. D’Hanis beat La Pryor, 42-22, to claim seventh place.

Other girl's division game Saturday saw Utopia down Leakey, 34-24, for third place, while Sabinal beat La Pryor, 40-39, to win the consolation title. D’Hanis blasted Brackett, 45-9, to take seventh in the girl's division.
