SWTJC Empowers Powerline Technician Students with New Bucket Truck

Uvalde, TX, November 14, 2023 - Southwest Texas Junior College's (SWTJC) Powerline Technician program has received a significant boost with the addition of a state-of-the-art bucket truck, allowing students to gain hands-on experience. The program received a generous donation of $35,000 from AEP Texas, with SWTJC covering the remaining $19,000 needed to purchase the truck.

The bucket truck will provide students with practical exercises, allowing them to work on powerlines by changing cross arms and wiring, hanging transformers, pole pins, guide wire and primary wires. This equipment provides a realistic platform for skill development.

The Powerline Technician program is a 12-week course that integrates 10 weeks of linemen-specific classroom and field work, along with two weeks of truck driver training to prepare students for a Class A Commercial Driver's License (CDL). Classes run from Monday to Friday, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Upon successful completion of the program, graduates will receive a Southwest Texas Junior College Certificate in Lineman Training. They will also undergo the Texas Department of Transportation written and driving tests for a Class A CDL, acquire First Aid/CPR certification and become eligible for entry-level employment as a lineman's apprentice.

To be eligible for admission to the program, candidates must meet certain criteria, including:

  • Minimum 18 years of age
