SWTJC board election has one contested race

There will be only one contested race in the SWTJC Board of Trustees election scheduled May 2.

Current board member Tony Moreno of Uvalde is being challenged by Bryan Hernandez, also of Uvalde in place four.

Hernandez was the lone individual to file on Feb. 14, which was the last day to file.

According to SWTJC President Hector Gonzales, Feb. 14 was the last day to file for a candidate to be on the ballot, while Feb. 18 was the last day for a write-in candidate to file.

“No one showed up to file, so we won’t have a write-in candidate,” said Gonzales. “Mr. Moreno has drawn an opponent, which is Bryan Hernandez and we will also have Mr. (Rodolfo) Flores in his place running unopposed.”

Moreno was elected to his first term in 2002, while longtime board president Flores has been a member of the SWTJC board since 1975.

A drawing for ballot placement was held on Feb. 24 in Uvalde at the SWTJC campus. Moreno drew first place, while Dr. Gonzales drew for Hernandez, who was unable to attend.

The last board of trustees’ election was approximately 12 years ago in May of 2008.

Early voting will be conducted from April 20 – 28, with election day being on May 2.

Registered voters in Real, Uvalde and Zavala counties are eligible to vote in the upcoming election.
